SharePoint Document Library

There is so much you can do with Microsoft SharePoint right out of the box. First of all, did you know SharePoint 2.0 comes standard with Windows Server 2003 and you can get a free download of SharePoint 3.0? And in Windows Server 2008, SharePoint 3.0 is included.

One of the templates that ships natively with SharePoint is the Document Library. You can create as many document libraries as you wish. The document library is a location where you can keep the same type of documents together for easy search and retrieval.

You can keep different data types within the document library including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat PDF, and different image file types. You can customize SharePoint, so that you keep additional attributes for each file.

One of my customer’s uses the document library for all of their proposals, contracts, and statement of work documents. They add extra attributes such as bid price, project type, bid date, and key employees of the project. SharePoint has great search functionality so you can search within entire documents (a little slower) or search the attributes for instant results.

Using the SharePoint Document Library is one way to keep your documents in a safe and easy-to-look-up location!
