Your company has 5 computers using a Windows XP Workgroup and you have decided it is time to upgrade to a real network with shared resources, common applications, and security. The first step would be to call your local Microsoft Small Business Specialist (that would be us!) and have them come onsite and give you a quote to install Windows SBS 2008.
Because you are using database applications, it makes sense to get the Premium Edition of SBS 2008. This version includes one SBS 2008 license and one Windows Server 2008 licenses as well as a Microsoft SQL Server license along with 5 Client Access Licenses (CALs). The firm that you hired orders the two new servers and once they are in, they show up to install and configure the system.
There are an unlimited number of ways to setup this network, depending on the unique situation and needs of the company. One possibility would be to place both servers in a secure room, with one server getting SBS 2008 installed on it, and the other one with both Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed on it. Your Small Business Specialist will connect your computers via a switch and add each computer individually to the Active Directory domain.
Next the Small Business Specialist will add a domain account for each user, along with a password that they change once they first logon. The Small Business Specialist will ensure that all computers are connected and then setup shared printers and faxes. If asked, the Small Business Specialist may even setup SharePoint for you to have a website for you shared documents, events calendar, and contact lists. Once all of these tasks are completed, you now have a fully functional network with security, shared resources, and applications that all of your users can access.
